NAS Consultation & Custom Build

Challenge
A client required a reliable and cost-effective NAS solution to support growing data storage needs. Off-the-shelf appliances like Synology or QNAP were considered, but their cost-to-performance ratio and scalability limitations made them less suitable for the long term.

Approach
We conducted a detailed consultation to evaluate requirements for performance, capacity, and flexibility. Based on this analysis, we recommended a custom TrueNAS deployment, designed to outperform pre-built options while remaining more cost-efficient.

Implementation
The system was built within a compact 4U server chassis and configured with a wide RAIDz1 pool of 4 × 16.37 TB drives, 64 GB of RAM, and dual 10 GbE network interfaces. This architecture provided high throughput, low latency, and future-proof scalability—since the RAIDz1 pool can be extended as storage needs evolve.

Result
The client received an enterprise-grade NAS solution that surpassed commercial alternatives in both performance and affordability. By choosing a tailored build, they gained not only faster access and higher reliability, but also long-term value through expandability and reduced ownership costs.

Proxmox Deployment for Self-Hosted Services

Challenge
A client sought to reduce dependency on subscription-based cloud services and regain control over their digital environment. They required a robust, centralized solution capable of running multiple self-hosted applications reliably and securely, without recurring vendor fees.

Approach
We recommended deploying a custom Proxmox virtualization environment. Proxmox provides the flexibility to host a wide range of virtual machines and lightweight containers, making it an ideal platform for consolidating self-hosted services into a single, efficient system.

Implementation
We designed and built a custom server optimized for Proxmox, with sufficient compute and storage resources to support long-term growth. Within this environment, we provisioned multiple LXC containers and virtual machines, each dedicated to replacing a commercial service:

• Immich to replace Google Photos

• TrueNAS to replace Synology for storage management

• Pi-hole for network-wide ad-blocking

• WireGuard for secure remote access

Additional services were deployed as needed, ensuring that the client’s digital ecosystem was entirely under their control.

Result
The client now operates a powerful, centralized platform for self-hosted services. This deployment eliminated recurring subscription costs, enhanced privacy, and provided greater flexibility for future expansions. By consolidating services into a single Proxmox-based system, the client achieved both financial savings and a more resilient IT infrastructure.

UniFi Protect Deployment for
Subscription-Free Security

Challenge
A client required a modern security camera system that offered reliable video surveillance, centralized management, and sufficient storage—without relying on ongoing subscription fees. The goal was to protect both the home and its surroundings with a solution that remained fully under the client’s control.

Approach
We recommended UniFi Protect, a robust surveillance platform that combines high-quality cameras with a powerful, self-hosted management system. Unlike cloud-based solutions, UniFi Protect enables complete ownership of both the hardware and the recordings, eliminating recurring costs while enhancing data privacy.

Implementation
We deployed a total of 8 UniFi cameras across indoor and outdoor areas, ensuring full coverage of entryways, common living spaces, and perimeter zones. The system was backed by 4 TB of dedicated storage, providing approximately 20 days of continuous video retention across all devices. The deployment also included:

• Centralized management through UniFi Protect OS

• Configured motion detection and real-time alerts

• Remote access capabilities without third-party subscriptions

• Expandable architecture to support future camera additions

Result
The client now benefits from a comprehensive, subscription-free surveillance platform. With crystal-clear video feeds, long-term storage, and robust privacy protections, the system delivers peace of mind while avoiding recurring costs. The combination of 8 cameras, dual-purpose indoor/outdoor coverage, and 20+ days of secure storage offers both immediate security and long-term scalability.
